Sultan Kudarat Province is situated between the provinces of Maguindanao and Cotabato to the north, South Cotabato and Sarangani to the south, Davao del Sur on the east and Moro Gulf on the west. The province's topography ranges from plains to rolling hills and mountain.

As delineated by the American Government in 1914, Sultan Kudarat was part of the province of Cotabato. In 1973, following the Tripoli Agreement and by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 341, Sultan Kudarat became part of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). However, majority of its residents voted against the inclusion of Sultan Kudarat in the ARMM in the 1989 plebiscite.
